Philippines Quiz: How Well Do You Know the Philippines?

What Is in the Philippines Quiz?

Ten rounds, alternating between four-option questions and puzzles. The five questions ask how many islands the country is made of, which two powers ruled it before independence, what share of a global workforce Filipinos make up, which religion most Filipinos belong to, and what one volcanic eruption in 1991 did to the whole planet. The puzzles are different in kind: a run of five where you decide whether a city is Filipino, a run of five where you decide whether a well known person is Filipino, two ordering rounds where seven countries are already in the right order by population and then by area and you place the Philippines among them, and one round where a color on the flag has been replaced and you drag a slider until it looks right.

There is no timer and no daily reset. Nothing is revealed between rounds, so the result screen is the first time you find out how any round went. It shows your score out of a hundred, a verdict, and what each of the ten rounds was worth.

What Does Your Score Mean?

The quiz ends with one of five verdicts. 90 to 100 points: You could give the tour. 75 to 89 points: You've earned the window seat. 60 to 74 points: Good enough for small talk. 45 to 59 points: You've only seen it on a map. 0 to 44 points: Philippines remains a mystery.

The bottom band ends where it does on purpose. A player tapping at random averages about 39 points of 100, nearly all of it partial credit from the two ordering rounds and the color slider, so guessing never earns a verdict that reads as praise. A score of 60 or more means you answered rather than guessed.

Facts About the Philippines

The Philippines has about 118 million people on roughly 300,000 square kilometers of land, spread across an archipelago that runs more than 1,800 kilometers from north to south. Filipino and English are both official languages, which is unusual in Asia and is the reason so much of public life, schooling and business runs in English. More than a hundred other languages are spoken at home, Ilocano and Hiligaynon among the larger ones.

The country sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, with more than twenty active volcanoes and regular earthquakes, and it lies directly in the path of the storms that form over the western Pacific, so around twenty tropical cyclones enter its waters in an average year. The population is young by regional standards, with a median age in the mid twenties, and the country is urbanizing faster than most of Southeast Asia.

Basketball rather than football is the sport the country is built around, a legacy of the early twentieth century that has outlasted almost everything else from that period. The jeepney, a shared passenger vehicle originally assembled from surplus military jeeps left behind after the war, is still the backbone of road transport in many towns. Adobo, meat stewed slowly in vinegar, is the dish most households cook most often.

Where Do the Questions Come From?

Every question's correct answer was checked against a published source before it shipped, and the decoys were checked too, for the opposite reason: a decoy that turns out to be true would give the question two defensible answers. Two options were rejected on exactly that ground while this quiz was being written.

The population and area figures behind the two ordering rounds come from the same dataset the rest of the geography games use, so a country's rank here matches its rank in Order the Country and Match the Country. Scoring and sources work the same way on every country quiz, and are set out in full on the country quizzes page.

Are There Quizzes for Other Countries?

Yes, five more, and each one is built the same way with its own questions, its own cities and people, and its own ordering rounds. There are the Germany quiz, the Bolivia quiz, the India quiz, the Mexico quiz and the Zambia quiz.
